Strength in numbers

The book industry needs a strong and effective representative to act on its behalf in relation to issues that affect the industry as a whole. Helpful cooperation between organisations representing the various sectors of the industry is also vital; particularly with the impact technology is having on the industry.

The Australian Booksellers Association (ABA) is the industry group that has been actively representing the interests of booksellers in Australia since the early 1900s. The ABA has strong links with other book industy organisations including the Australian Publishers Association.

To be effective, an industry group must be representative of the full diversity within the trade. This means it must attract both a large membership and one that is as broadly based as possible.

The ABA actively seeks new members to ensure that it reflects the diversity of Australian booksellers. The Association's membership includes a cross-section of booksellers from small to large, and both independent and chain stores, and campus bookshops.

Size increases influence and encourages involvement. Each additional member increases the scope of our activities and expertise to the Association and helps provide the resources to expand and develop programs and activities which benefit the whole membership.

With the support of its existing member base, the ABA is undertaking an extensive program to upgrade and expand its services to members. An injection of additional resources and energy from a further increase in membership will enable the Association to broaden and strengthen its functions and activities to an even greater extent.
